Sound in thrillers

Diegetic Sound-sound that comes from a person or object in the digenesis and seem within the field of vision.

Ambient sound- background sound belonging to the digenesis but not always in the field of vision. Ambient sound within the field of vision may include the hubbub of a crowd or the quiet sound car radio or engine over which the dialogue takes place.

Non-diegetic sound- sound that comes from nothing within the field of vision and has been added afterwards in the editing process.

Synchronous sound- where the sound is synchronised with the object emitting that sound- as in lip-sync where the actor’s mouth moves exactly in time with the words we hear.

Asynchronous sound- this is where the sound track is deliberately out of sync with what we see.

Sound effects- sounds added to the visuals in editing.

Sound motif- a sound associated with a character or a place.

Sound bridge- this is where the sound continues across one or more cuts/transitions.

Dialogue- the sound made by characters talking to each other.

Voiceover- where a voice from outside the digesis gives the audience information.

Mode of address- this covers the manner in which the narrative comes across to the audience.

Direct address- when a narrator or a character speaks directly  to the audience, not to the characters within the diegesis.

Sound mixing- mixes sound from various sources using a multi-track mixing desk.

Sound perspective-sound recording that helps us place a sound as either near or distant or coming from a particular place within the diegesis.

Analysis of sound in thrillers

One of the main factors that appears in most thriller films is sound. The sound helps set the mood of the scene and plays with the audience’s emotions. The sound can tell part of the story even if the nothing was being shown on the screen, it can make you feel scared, nervous or excited. Sometimes even there can be no sound and can be completely silent, this also sets the mood of the scene. The timing of the sound sets the pace of the scene and adds tension to the scene.

Here shows someone holding a gun, the music was fast and loud. This keeps the audience engaged.

Demographics:

Age: I think that the age group for this film is teenagers to young adults because it looks like a young man that is going through hard times with a relationship.

Gender: I think that this film is for both genders because it shows to you people going through a hard relationship together.

Race/nationality: I don’t think the film is aimed at any individual race or nationality so I think it’s for everyone.

Social economic class: I think that in this film it shows both upper and lower class in the film because the man is sometimes wearing posh jackets and then he is shirtless with tattoos so he probably experienced both either losing his job or become in a financial struggle. For example it looks like this man started off in the A categorically but then dropped to an E class because now looks unemployed. I think any class can watch this film because it looks like this man goes through every economic class.

Typography: I think that the style of the font is done to give suspense of what is going to happen like it has been rushed because the people are in a problem and need to get away.

Psychographics:
Interests/hobbies/life style/jobs: I think that the people that would watch this are ‘explorers’ (young people or students that are looking for something different). They would watch this because they are stuck in education wanting to do something for a change.
I also think that a struggler would watch this film because they have nothing better to do (a person that has done bad in life and drinks and eats the wrong things and in some cases they are unemployed) so they would watch anything.

What makes a thriller thrilling?

When asking other people we found out that people find music and lighting a big aspect of what makes a thriller thrilling. Lighting affects the atmosphere of the thriller, which acts on your emotions. The music also acts on your emotion, the pace of  the music can make you feel more tense which makes the audience feel similarly to the characters in the film.

What is your favourite type of thriller?

Everyone we asked liked a different type of thriller. Some people prefer a thriller with a mystery or with an in depth storyline. From looking at this you learn that a thriller film doesn't have to be scary, it can have other aspects which make the film appealing for everyone.

Prelim

 What went well?

  • We used a large range of shots and camera angles throughout.
  • We used the 180 degree rule correctly.
  • We used match on action correctly.
  • We edited out all the shots that weren't needed and we put everything together.
  • In part of the prelim we used the camera correctly to create the CCTV footage look.

Why it went well- did you plan this part carefully, did you use a particular skill for this part?
We had a lot of different uses of camera shots and we planned how we were going to use it by drawing out a rough diagram reminding us what we were planning to do. we had two people in charge of a camera making sure it was using the 180 degree rile correctly and making sure it was focusing in the way we wanted it to.

What makes a thriller thrilling and how it effects the audience?

What makes a thriller thrilling and how does it effect the audience?

When you’re watching a thriller, their aim is to keep you watching it, so they try to keep you hooked so you want to know what happens in the end. The main elements that appear in a thriller film are tension, excitement, suspense and excitement. A thriller provides a rush of emotions which keep the audience on the edge of their seats, the plots often have plot twists and cliff-hangers which keep it exciting for the audience.

They use certain camera angles to create different mood of the characters and gives a sense of emotion of the characters and the setting. For example ‘extreme close ups’ these are when the camera zooms in very close to the character, to maybe their eyes or on an object to show how important something is or to show someone’s emotion.

The music they provide is used to set the mood of the characters and the setting of the scene. This allows you to get a sense of what they’re feeling. For example if they use frightening music that maybe because they’re wanting you to feel frightened. They do this to make you feel as involved in the film as they can. This keeps the audience hooked and makes you want to keep watching it.

timeline for v for vendetta

Film titles are used in films to present openings to the film or to a specific scene. The titles are often there to give you a rough idea about a certain character or something or a place. They are also used to present important producers of the film, this may include actors, producers, directors etc.

They often have opening titles. This occurs at the beginning of the film, they go through the key actors and important makers of the film. They present the text of the title and other credits gives you a hint as to what the film could be about. the style of the font can present what the genre of the film is. for example if the title were to look rough and in dark colours, this implies the genre of the film could be a Thriller or Horror.
