What makes a thriller thrilling and how does it effect the audience?

 When you’re watching a thriller, their aim is to keep you watching it, so they try to keep you hooked so you want to know what happens in the end. The main elements that appear in a thriller film are tension, excitement, suspense and excitement. A thriller provides a rush of emotions which keep the audience on the edge of their seats, the plots often have plot twists and cliff-hangers which keep it exciting for the audience.

 They use certain camera angles to create different mood of the characters and gives a sense of emotion of the characters and the setting. For example ‘extreme close ups’ these are when the camera zooms in very close to the character, to maybe their eyes or on an object to show how important something is or to show someone’s emotion.

 The music they provide is used to set the mood of the characters and the setting of the scene. This allows you to get a sense of what they’re feeling. For example if they use frightening music that maybe because they’re wanting you to feel frightened. They do this to make you feel as involved in the film as they can. This keeps the audience hooked and makes you want to keep watching it.
 
The Bourne Identity
 
The Bourne Identity is the story of a man whose wounded body is discovered by fishermen who nurse him back to health. He can remember nothing and begins to try to rebuild his memory based on clues such as the Swiss bank account, the number of which, is implanted in his hip. He soon realizes that he is being hunted and takes off with Marie on a search to find out who he is and why he is being hunted.
Target audience
The target audience for the Bourne Identity is for people that enjoy the thriller genre. The film is suitable for teenagers onwards, the film is action packed and the pace of the film is very fast, there is always something important happening which makes the audience feel they need to stay focused for the whole time in order to understand what is happening.

Key vocabulary

  • Star persona, this means an actor which has been recognised to have appeared a lot in a specific genre of film. An example of this would be Matt Damon who has appeared in a lot of thriller films.
  • Typography is the style or the font of the text in the film.
  • Film slogan is a quote or phrase used in the film, that sometimes comes up in the film.


Inception
 
Inception a thriller and sci-fi based film made in 2010. The story is based on Dom Cobb (Leonardo Dicaprio) who discovers deep secrets within ones subconscious, dreams within dreams. through mistakes he's made in the past forcing him to be separated from his family. Cobb and his team try to discover way which he can go back and make things right.Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. 
 

Target audience
Inception is suitable for those that enjoy a thriller. Inception has a complex storyline which keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The film would be suitable for teenagers onwards. It would also be suitable for people that enjoy sci-fi movies, the films talks a lot about dreams and the way things effect your subconscious, which would appeal to people that enjoy a slightly educational thriller. The film shows how far someone is willing to go to change thing he's done in the past to make things right for him and his family. The plan Cobb (Leonardo Dicaprio) is a make or break plan, if it went wrong he knows the consequences would ruin his changes of being reunited with his family.


Angels and Demons 
 
 
The murder of a physicist, Father Silvano Bentivoglio, a symbolist, Robert Langdon, and a scientist, Vittoria Vetra, are on an adventure involving a secret brotherhood, the Illuminati. Due to Robert's curiosity of the religion involved, he begins to realise how dangerous some peoples actions to show their beliefs are putting people in further danger than he ever thought possible.  Clues lead them all around the Vatican, including the four altars of science, Earth, Air, Fire and Water. An assassin, working for the Illuminati, has captured four cardinals, and murders each, painfully. Robert (Tom Hanks) and Vittoria also are searching for a new very destructive weapon that could kill millions.

Target audience
Angels and Demons is a mystery/thriller film, this film would be suitable for that enjoy a mystery based film, religion events occur throughout the film and it uses religious beliefs and how science and religion effects the real world. The unexpected, jumpy moments keep the audience on the edge of their seats. This film would be suitable for those who take an interest to religion.
