Mise en scene in Inception

Mise-en-scene

Lighting
From looking at this particular shot, the lighting shows a contrast from one side to the other. One side is bright sunlight shining through the buildings. The other side is shown very dark and grey. The distorted buildings connotes they're in a dangerous setting. The people in the picture appear to be stranded on top of a building with all the other falling buildings, they're all looking towards the sunlight. This represents them trying to escape to the bright sunlight. This is typical of the thriller genre because the filters used create the illusion of a threatening atmosphere.
Costume/Actors The actors appear to be dressed very smartly, the two main characters are shown in suits, this shows them to be almost like detectives. Similarly the women presented are dressed very formally, however one is dressed a glamorous dress whilst holding a gun. This suggests she could be villain that nobody expects. The other female is dressed in business wear and is looks like she is running, this suggests she could be vulnerable. The man in the centre, is shown differently to the others, he is dressed in more army clothing, this shows he is the stereotypical one that is up for the fight. This is typical of the thriller genre because it shows every character to have a different role, this makes you see the film from different points of the view.

Props
Many props are used for this film, one of which is the spinner. It occurs time and time again, showing the importance of it. It also creates a sense of enigma because its all the camera focus's on. It also creates a sense of mystery and fear.
Another prop regularly used is the stereo-typical gun, this is often used as a sign of danger. The image shows him to be concentrating on something whilst holding a gun, this suggests he could angry about something or frightened.
This is typical of the thriller genre as they have used extreme close ups of certain props and blurred out the background to emphasise the importance of the prop. Likewise the gun, this is typically used because it represents the danger.

Use of Colour
The colour used varies at different scene. At this particular scene it has the use of a dark sepia tone. This connotes the themes of the film, which is disturbing. The man in the centre has been presented to look almost like a shadow, this signifies him to be a dangerous man and to have a key role in this scene. The use of dark colours creates a  dark and threatening atmosphere. This is typical of the thriller genre because it signifies danger from the dark colours and clarifies the important characters.
Setting
The setting of this scene is shown to be in the middle of nowhere, with dark dangerous high cliffs, this creates the sense of mystery and danger that the characters will face. The lighting of the scene allows us to see it clearly, it doesn't look like they have used a filter to it, this makes it look realistic, which can be more shocking to the audience. This is typical of the thriller genre because it lets you see the scenery for what it really is and emphasises on the dark cliffs and abandoned buildings which represents danger.

Editing
The camera angles of this shot surprise the audience, this creates the illusion of the building being turned up side down whilst they're fighting. This connotes the danger they're faced with. The lighting is bright and clear, this makes it clear for the audience to see exactly what is happening. All of the shots are mid shots or close ups, both create different impressions of the story. The characters are both holding weapons which is a typical aspects of the thriller genre. This is typical of the thriller genre, The camera angles make the fight scene more interesting to the audience, which makes them pay more attention to the scene.
Typography
The typography used is very important when presenting the film. This example shows the main characters and the title collaborating one of the main props used, this shows to the audience that it has a key role in the film. The lettering is in white with a dark background, this makes it stand out clearly to the audience.
The typography used for this image, uses a dark font, the dark colours used creates the sense of danger and mystery, both are used to make a good thriller film. The background of the film is of a labyrinth. The connotes the sense of mystery as though a complicated journey awaits them. This is typical of the thriller genre because it shows very little to go on, it doesn't show any of the characters or of the settings, this will keep the audience interested. The other typography is the opposite, it shows you main characters and a glimpse of the setting, this would appeal to some viewers because people would be curious as to what its about.
